What is a water heater expansion tank?
A small tank connected to a water heater that absorbs the excess pressure created when water expands as it heats in a closed plumbing system.
An expansion tank is a safety device installed on most residential water heater lines to handle the pressure that builds when water is heated. As water temperature rises, it expands naturally. In older homes with open plumbing systems, this extra volume could flow back out through the main water supply. Modern homes use check valves or closed-loop systems that prevent water from flowing backward, trapping that expansion inside the pipes and tank. Without somewhere for the expanded water to go, pressure climbs dangerously high and can crack tank seams, burst pipes, or damage valves throughout the home.
The expansion tank, typically a small vessel with an air chamber on one side and a water chamber on the other, sits horizontally or vertically near the water heater. When pressure spikes from thermal expansion, the water pushes into the tank and compresses the air inside, absorbing the pressure safely. The tank then pushes that water back into the system as temperature drops and pressure normalizes. Most expansion tanks have a rubber bladder or diaphragm dividing the two chambers, and they require periodic inspection to ensure the air charge remains adequate. When properly sized and maintained, an expansion tank extends the life of your water heater and connected plumbing by preventing stress damage from repeated thermal cycling.
